Position Summary

The Nurse Supervisor is a licensed experienced professional who is responsible for overseeing the clinical activities for a department or area. They assist in managing the department along with other leaders to oversee clinical management for a defined population, according to standardized work and procedures, and policies, in collaboration with department leaders and others within the center.  They provide oncology nursing care within scope of license in collaboration with staff and physician(s) leaders.  Professional practice as a health team member is defined by departmental policies, standards of practice and procedures.  Emphasis is placed on health promotion, safe care, and patient education and support, combining the qualities of both nursing and medicine. This nurse leader uses the nursing process to timely resolve patient care issues and is a patient advocate in all ethical and legal aspects. They assist in establishing standards of care to assure patient care is safe, timely and provided in an effective manner. They possess the ability to evaluate individuals and work with staff for performance as well as coach, mentor and discipline when necessary. They will promote the use of critical thinking, evidence-based care, and teamwork.

They will supervise RNs, LVNs, technicians and other clinical staff within the area.  They partner with other leaders on staffing, which includes, hiring, work assignments, education, coaching, training, evaluating job performance and clinical competencies, and administering disciplinary actions, as appropriate.  They participate in planning for financial, capital equipment and needs of the department and related programs. This includes participation in and managing to the operating budget. They will actively participate with peers, subordinates, leaders and other supervisors in constructive problem solving. They will contribute to quality improvement initiatives, and the corrective actions required to address regulatory and accreditation standards being an active participant in any changes.

Essential Functions

  • Utilizes the City of Hope nursing process in clinical practice.
  • Assumes oversight of direct clinical management of a defined patient population, according to standardized procedures and in collaboration with a other leaders.
  • Works with leadership to develop solutions and systems to meet/exceed budgetary growth and targets.
  • Monitors and audits the purchasing of all clinical equipment and supplies.
  • Integral member of the management team, leading initiatives on employee engagement, staff development, etc.
  • Assists in developing methods and systems for provision of nursing care and overall department operations.
  • Maintains open lines of communication with the physicians and multidisciplinary health team regarding patient information.
  • Collaborates with others when possible to solve financial issues.
  • Communicates with COH departments to maintain functionality of all clinical equipment and supplies.
  • Works with the Nursing Director to develop and implement staff education activities; Coaches staff and partners with the Director to counsel staff on behavior and clinical issues.
  • Ensures that employees provide services that are accurate, reliable, courteous and timely.
  • Supports and promotes the efforts of all care providers to deliver quality care.
  • Coordinates site onboarding, orientation and ongoing competency assessment for all clinical staff (RN, LVN, technicians and others)
  • Supervises clinical staff in the delivery of quality care, treatment and service delivery by serving as a role model.
  • Ensures that all professional and regulatory standards are met and maintained.
  • Promotes collaboration and teamwork among all members of the health care team.
  • Effectively communicates with all customers and team members to meet organization goals and customer services expectations.
  • Ensures the efficient and effective use of resources.
  • Leads and participates in performance improvement activities to evaluate the program's effectiveness in meeting patient care and departmental needs.
  • Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, reviewing current literature, attending in-service meetings, and workshops.
  • Attends and participates in meetings.           

Follows established City of Hope and department policies, procedures, objectives, performance improvement, attendance, safety, environmental, and infection control guidelines, including adherence to the workplace Code of Conduct and Compliance Plan.  Practices a high level of integrity and honesty in maintaining confidentiality.

Position Qualifications:

Minimum Education:

  • If hired before January 1, 2020: Graduate from nursing school with a diploma, Associate Degree or Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing. 
  • If hired after January 1, 2020, Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree in nursing is required.

Minimum Experience:

  • Experience with oncology patients and leadership experience with multiple staff. Leadership experience in department of supervision.

Required Certification/Licensure:

  • Current California Registered Nurse License
  • Current BLS certification from American Heart Association
  • Current ACLS certification from American Heart Association
  • Certification in field of study (CNOR, CAPA, OCN etc).

Preferred education experience and skills:

  • Master’s degree in nursing
