Position Summary

A Staff Scientist position is available in Beckman Research Institute of City of Hope.  The Staff Scientist series is designed for career research professionals whose primary function is to support the research infrastructure and activities of the institution. Staff Scientists will bring special skills, knowledge and experience to research programs or institutional core laboratories.  Individuals appointed as staff scientists will receive a one-year fixed-term contract.

A full time Staff Scientist position as a Flow Cytometry specialist is available in the shared resource facility for a diverse group of researchers at this national cancer institute.  The Analytical Cytometry Core is a shared resource equipped with 6 BD Aria cell sorters, several flow cytometry analyzers of various models including a 5 laser Cytek Aurora, a CyTOF-Helios mass cytometer, and a Nanosight small particle characterizer.  The successful candidate must be enthusiastic, self-motivated, dependable, a team player, and able to fulfill a service role in this busy core facility.  We are searching for a candidate with a strong immunology background to lead the institutional advancement for high parameter cytometry, with mass cytometry and full spectrum cytometry options.  The candidate will also have extensive experience with flow cytometry, preferably in a core or shared resource lab setting.

Along with focusing on the advancement of high parameter cytometry, the candidate will be involved in daily instrument calibration, sample acquisition and/or sorting, training the user base on instrument operation and software usage, data analysis, data management and backup, and routine maintenance and troubleshooting of equipment. In addition to operation of the flow cytometers, the candidate will also utilize the CyTOF-Helios for sample acquisition. The candidate will be involved in assisting researchers with the design, execution, and interpretation of cytometry results.  He/She will also keep accurate records of experiments that are run in the facility.  He/She must be able to work a somewhat flexible schedule on both of our campuses to meet the needs of the facility.

Basic education, experience and skills required for consideration:

The Staff Scientist must possess, at a minimum, the U.S. equivalent Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in an appropriate discipline, and will often have a Ph.D. or other doctoral level degree.

  • Flow Cytometry experience including instrument operation for analytical and cell sorting platforms.
  • Knowledge of BD FACS Diva and Flowjo softwares
  • Mass Cytometry experience is preferred, but training will be provided if necessary.
  • Must be willing to work with complex instrumentation
  • Must have excellent computer skills.
  • Have the ability to work with a diverse group of people
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work flexible hours
