Position Summary

Under the direction of the Clinical Pathology chemistry/POCT supervisor, the POCT coordinator oversees and coordinates the laboratory testing performed by nursing under the CLIA waived certificate.  This person is responsible for the QC/QA of the program, assists with technical issues arising within the point of care setting and works with nursing to match the workflow of the nursing staff to the regulations governing this activity. Assumes other responsibilities, as delegated from the Chemistry Laboratory Supervisor and laboratory Director under CLIA ‘88’. May perform duties of medical technologist, primarily in the chemistry laboratory, as detailed in other job duties section.

Key Responsibilities include:

On behalf of the clinical laboratory and under the guidance / direction of section supervisor and laboratory director, acts as the technical expert for nursing with regard to matters related to the evaluation, monitoring and implementation of POCT program

  • Does the initial research and development of policies and procedure to ensure they meet all regulatory requirements
  • Assists Chemistry Supervisor in writing and implementing policies and procedures
  • Performs validation studies on new equipment and reviews findings with supervisor / director
  • Ensures that all manuals are current and reviewed annually by supervisor / director
  • In concert with institutional and departmental controls, maintains document control of all procedures
  • Conducts electronic and/or manual audits to monitor that the established policies and procedures are being followed
  • Performs validation of reagents and equipment on a regular basis based on regulatory and GLP practices
  • Facilitates educational and on going assessment of the POCT programs
  • Assists with the creation of education material for point of care activities
  • Assists with the creation of POCT competency material
  • Assists with general staff training as necessary
  • Remains abreast of new developments in POCT technology
  • Carries pager to allow for access by Nursing personnel
  • Provides guidance to technical and nursing staff

Monitors daily activity of the POCT system

  • In collaboration with the nursing contacts; audits, and corrects errors within the POCT system
  • Responds to physician and nursing needs in a timely fashion
  • Reviews and communicates error log detail to appropriate nursing contacts
  • Performs validations studies required on new lot/shipments of reagents
  • In cooperation with the SPD manager, maintain supply levels of POCT regents and controls

Monitors Quality control/QA and competency records

  • Responsible for review and monitoring of the quality control and proficiency testing programs for all POCT testing
  • Maintains the personnel database showing which nursing and ancillary staff are allowed to perform POCT
  • Monitors competency records and ensures compliance with CLIA competency regulations
  • Compiles and distributes data for QA audits done my nursing contacts
  • Oversees the maintenance of the College of American pathologist Laboratory Accreditation program standard requirements with the POCT setting and coordinates external survey activities with the Nursing department

Works closely with and meets regularly with the chemistry supervisor to ensure information flow and continuity of services rendered (5%)

  • Makes recommendations to the Chemistry Supervisor regarding instrument acquisition
  • Acts as first contact for POCT vendor interaction
  • Evaluates new equipment being considered for POCT
  • Performs validation studies on newly acquired equipment
  • Provides regular feedback and communication to nursing and chemistry supervisor
  • Troubleshoots ad-hoc problems/issues with POCT operations

Budget/Financial Administration:

oversee ordering of supplies, interacts with vendors, and gathers financial information for the chemistry supervisor

Maintains the core chemistry competency

  • Shares in weekend and holiday rotation in the clinical laboratory
  • Under the guidance and direction of the chemistry supervisor may cover for sick time and vacation time in the core chemistry area as necessary

Performs a variety of complex laboratory tests and procedures according to prescribed protocols and assigned schedules in order to maintain skills as medical technologist in chemistry section.  Performs data entry of diagnostic information and utilizes standard laboratory equipment and records and checks results for completeness and accuracy.

Assists with the oversight of the College of American pathologist Laboratory Accreditation Program standard requirements within the section and coordinates external survey activities in the section.

Participates in new test development. This includes actually performing new tests or supervising other medical technologists in test development.

Responsible for developing Misys information system applications for the section, including but not limited to worksheets and other laboratory software applications.

Basic education, experience and skills required for consideration:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology or related field from an accredited university.
  • Minimum of (1) one year experience in a large hospital laboratory medicine environment.  Preferred 3-5 years applicable experience.
  • Experience in a leadership role within the hospital environment.

Required Certification/Licensure:

  • Certification by the Board of Registry of the ASCP or equivalent.
  • Licensed as a CLS in the state of California.

Preferred education experience and skills:

  • Masters degree preferred.
  • Clinical Pathology emphasis in Chemistry and hematology/coagulation.
  • Experience with interdisciplinary teams.
  • Able to work independently with high degree of efficiency and integrity.
  • Specialty certificate in either chemistry or hematology.
