Position Summary
The Senior Data Interface Developer is responsible for the design, development, testing, support and maintenance of application integrations and infrastructure supporting mission critical clinical and business processes at City of Hope. The position is responsible for building integration solutions using HL7, SFTP, SOAP and RESTful Web Services, Epic Bridges, publish/subscribe based message buses e.g. Kafka and Enterprise iPaaS technologies. 

While following the project management lifecycle process, the Data Interface Developer works closely with analysts and SMEs to understand and provide feedback on complex functional requirements, identify gaps and technical limitations, propose solutions and workarounds and formalize solutions in technical design documents, followed by coding, unit, functional and regression testing. 

The position also assumes active support of existing applications, ability to prioritize/plan tasks based on severity of user impact, troubleshoot complex issues and promptly resolve any service interruptions in 24/7 enterprise environment, respond to ad-hoc users request e.g. for research purposes, be aware or organizational structure and processed to be able to effectively interact with other internal teams and vendors.

Key Responsibilities include:

Technical Skills Required

  • Expert level knowledge of HL7 V2 messaging standard and enterprise integration patterns and technologies e.g. publish / subscribe messaging pattern, APIs, REST and SOAP Web Services. 
  • Familiarity with FHIR HL7 standard.
  • Expertise in building complex event-based real-time interfaces 
  • Experience using and operationally supporting enterprise level interface integration platforms (e.g. Corepoint, Rhapsody) while assisting customers with issue resolution, and exercising best practices to monitor and conduct preventive and routine maintenance on business systems.
  • Knowledge and proficiency in troubleshooting application problems/issues in a 24/7 enterprise environment.
  • Expert level knowledge of HL7 message structure e.g. ADT, SIU, ORM, ORU.
  • Demonstrated experience with 3G object-oriented programming languages (e.g. C#, Java, Python).
  • Knowledge of common algorithms and data structures (e.g. sorting, trees).
  • Understanding and usage of loops, arrays, variables, if-else logic statements, and re-usable code.
  • Understanding and usage of source control for software development.
  • Basic understanding of database concepts and working knowledge of the ways to interact with database e.g. Structured Query Language (SQL).
  • Ability to translate complex business requirements into software designs and solutions.
  • Ability to understand technical requirements provided by analysts e.g. in a form of HL7 specification documents.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in software testing (unit, functional, regression), including the creation and execution of test plans.
  • Ability to author technical documents including technical designs, system diagrams, workflow diagrams, presentations, white papers and interface mapping documents to be consumed by peers and end users.
  • Understanding of IT infrastructure components including server-class hardware, software, storage and network.
  • Demonstrated understanding of information system security fundamentals and principals, including security protocols, encryption and access management to ensure adherence to regulatory/compliance requirements.

Functional Skills and Soft Skills Required

  • Understanding of clinical workflows, clinical and administrative systems participating in information exchange e.g. through messaging or file transfers.
  • Experience with workflow analysis, associated terminologies and process redesign to improve efficiency and performance. Ability to document them with industry standard tools such as Visio or PowerPoint.
  • Ability to accurately scope, define and estimate work effort for assigned projects.
  • Demonstrated experience with fundamentals, principals, and processes related to change control for information systems.
  • Working knowledge of basic analytics/statistical principles, and the ability to synthesize complex information into an easy to understand manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop metrics and reporting frameworks to measure efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform effective risk planning and mitigation.
  • Understanding and experience with both agile and waterfall development methodologies. Working knowledge of the principals of Systems/Software Development Life Cycle.
  • Knowledge of processes, procedures and organizational structure (e.g. escalation contact points on external teams) that regulate support of existing and development of new integrations.
  • Ability to work with customers and vendors to analyze problems, determine appropriate courses of action, and identify root causes and resolutions.
  • Ability to provide feedback on technical requirements, identify gaps, technical limitations and propose solutions that fit into technical constraints.
  • Ability to adapt to changing working conditions and work assignments, to be open, and motivated to learn and adapt new ideas and concepts, and to work independently or as part of the team to work on multiple tasks.

Basic education, experience and skills required for consideration:

  • Bachelor’s Degree. 
  • Experience may substitute for minimum education requirement. Must have 4 additional years of data integration experience along with the minimum experience requirement in lieu of a Bachelor’s degree.
  • 5+ year related healthcare information technology experience
  • 3 years of data integration experience
  • Epic Bridges Certification
