Position Summary

The Manager, in collaboration with and direction from the Director of PeriOperative Services, is responsible for the management of day-to-day operation of the Sterile Processing Department. The Manager facilitates ordering and receiving instrumentation, record keeping, and instrument processing and case cart preparation and delivery. The position also requires assisting in developing, updating and maintaining policies and procedures in accordance with the Joint Commission, AAMI, AORN, and OSHA guidelines to ensure proper cleaning, preparation, sterilization and distribution of surgical instrumentation and SPD supplies. The Manager supervises the CSSR staff. The Manager reports to the Director of PeriOperative Services.

Key Responsibilities include:

Customer Service

  • On-going communication with medical center staff to adjust or add supplies for equipment to areas, address patient transports issues.

Instrument Processing

The Manager ensures the timely processing and delivery of sterile instrumentation to the Operating Room and other Clinic areas. This is evidence by:

  • Ensuring instruments are cleaned, assembled, sterilized, stored, and distributed according to departmental policies and procedures that support regulatory agencies.
  • Notifying OR Nurse Manager of potential instrument and supply shortages, and works with Materials Management to obtain alternative products as needed.
  • Investigating, reporting and resolving case cart instrument and supply variances.
  • Supervising daily activities of Sterile Processing Lead Technicians, and Technicians.
  • Establishing routine instrument maintenance schedules; ensuring routine maintenance of prime department equipment including sterilizers, instrument washers, ultrasonic cleaner and cart washer.
  • Arranging for instrument and equipment repair.

Human Resource Management

The Manager is responsible for facilitating, stimulating and evaluating human resources to provide quality, cost efficient processing and supply service to the Operating Rooms and ancillary services as evidenced by:

  • Staffing the department to meet operational requirements based on resources available and the daily OR schedule.
  • Documentation and communications of staff performance with recommendations for quality, growth and development of goals.
  • Interdisciplinary collaboration to foster staff development.
  • Development of the Sterile Processing staffing schedule to provide a fiscally sound and safe staffing pattern, which meets department needs. Analyzes trends and identifies problems.
  • Conducting informational staff meetings to provide a positive environment conducive to change in instrument processing technology.
  • Identifying staff educational needs and working with the appropriate Educator to coordinate training.
  • Identifying and resolving service-related issues.
  • Promote staff certification within first year of employment and assist with compliance of processing standards.
  • Respect for policies and procedures including union contracts and standards of practice.
  • Participates in staff recruitment and retention.
  • Conducting disciplinary action with respect to personnel, and policies and procedures.
  • Reviews employee performance and attendance on an ongoing basis.
  • Maintaining department records on staff orientation, training, annual performance evaluations, tardiness, attendance, meetings and SPD reports.

Financial Management

  • The Manager effectively utilizes resources to develop cost efficient delivery of high quality service as evidenced by:
  • Provide high quality service to the OR through cost effective management of department staffing, instrumentation and supplies
  • Encourage staff to participate in development of cost-effective ideas and plans.
  • Develops Sterile Processing capital and operational budget with oversight from Director of PeriOperative Services.
  • Develops Sterile Processing staffing and scheduling to maximize personnel talent and potential.

Administrative Functions

  • Collaborating with OR Nurse Manager and Service Line Leaders to update procedure-specific pick lists and tray lists used to prepare for scheduled surgical procedures.
  • Standardizes terminology to increase case pull accuracy.
  • Working collaboratively with Materials Management staff to contact vendors, as needed, to check status of open instrument/equipment orders, pricing and new product information.
  • Arranging in-services and provides training for staff development.
  • Responsible for entering employee payroll with accuracy.
  • Creates and processes instrument orders.

Basic education, experience and skills required for consideration:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent required. Experience may substitute.
  • Must have 5-7 years of current experience working in a Central/Sterile Processing Sterilization or Operating Room environment. Certification as a Certified in Healthcare Leadership (CHL) supervisor/ manager is a plus.

Required Certification/Licensure:

  • Must have (or obtain within 90 days of hire) a certification as a Certified Registered Central Sterile Technician (CRCST) by the International Association for Central Sterile Healthcare Materiel Management (IAHCSMM), or, as a Central Sterile Professional Department Technician (CSPDT) by the American Society of Healthcare Central Sterile Professionals (ASHCSP). Certifications need to be maintained by obtaining the required CEU's each year through the certifying agency.

Preferred education experience and skills:

  • Master’s degree preferred.
  • Formal training in health care, business, or materials management obtained through college credits
