Position Summary

Working as authorized by the Laboratory Director under Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments of 1988, CFR Section 493.1445(a). Supports cytogenetic/molecular genetic laboratory testing and specimen processing on human tissue using standardized and established methodology, while under direct and constant supervision by licensed personnel. Assists cytogenetic technologists in various aspects of accessioning and processing biological specimens for genetic analysis. Follows established institutional/departmental safety procedures.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Assists with processing of cytogenetic specimens for a variety of cells and tissue types. Assists in slide preparation and staining. Ensures maximum quality of staining by providing initial assessment of slide quality (spreading and mitotic index). Stores slides and specimen material per department guidelines.
  • Performs accessioning and data entry of patient information following department procedures.
  • Follows and maintains knowledge of established techniques for preparing and processing biological specimens for genetic analyses using appropriate biohazard and aseptic procedures.
  • Transports specimens for analysis, using appropriates or specified equipment for transporting and handling specimens. Ensures proper labeling and obtains pertinent clinical information on request forms.
  • Following department procedures, prepares karyotypes for technologist evaluation.
  • Prepares laboratory reagents to proper concentration and pH, as per department procedure.
  • Checks and cleans equipment. Is proficient in the use of laboratory equipment and instruments including incubators, tissue culture and conventional microscopes, centrifuges, freezers, autoclaves, and biohazard hoods.
  • Maintains orderliness, cleanliness and follows safety practices in work areas.
  • Under the supervision of licensed personnel, participates in the department’s quality control, quality assurance, or quality improvement program.
  • Receives supplies and distributes them to the appropriate area within the laboratory.
  • Attends departmental meetings as required and participates in the department continuing education program.
  • Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to maintain certification/licensure (if applicable), and/or keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise.

Basic education, experience and skills required for consideration:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a Chemical, Physical, Biological, Clinical Laboratory Science or Medical Technology
  • One year of previous clinical laboratory and tissue culture experience

Additional Information:

  • Pay Rate: $23.00 - $31.51 per hour
  • As a condition of employment, City of Hope requires staff to comply with all state and federal vaccination mandates.

The estimated pay scale represents the typical [salary/hourly] range City of Hope reasonably expects to pay for this position, with offers determined based on several factors which may include, but not be limited to, the candidate’s experience, expertise, skills, education, job scope, training, internal equity, geography/market, etc. This pay scale is subject to change from time to time.
