Position Summary

The Manager of Anatomic Pathology is a licensed professional and technical expert responsible for managing the operational, administrative, and fiscal management of the laboratory. The manager is responsible for the overall management of the day-to-day operations and technical functions of Anatomic Pathology. The manager will work in partnership with the Department Director and Division Chief / Medial Director on the implementation and facilitation of strategic plans consistent with the department’s goals and COH enterprise vision.

Main responsibilities include directing day to day operational and technical activities of functional areas, budgeting, personnel management and providing leadership to laboratory staff. Ensures the laboratory follows regulatory and accreditation requirements of CAP, CLIA, State of CA, and Joint Commission.

Key Responsibilities include:

Financial Management:

  • In partnership with the Director, estimates future personnel and capital equipment needs and monitors and responses to variances against budget on an ongoing basis.
  • Works with the Director in the development and implementation of budget and plans to control costs and improve department operations and efficiencies.
  • Develops initial draft of business cases for key initiatives.

Operational Management:

  • Collaborates with the leadership team and staff within the department to ensure the appropriate operational direction with the needed policies and procedures to carry out core operational functions and activities.
  • Ensures that procedure manuals of all standard operating procedures are maintained, updated, and modified as new methods are introduced.
  • Ensures close working relationship between the Clinical Laboratory and internal / external customers including vendors, nursing, leadership, and physicians, etc.
  • Provides oversight of the proficiency survey program.
  • Reviews staff competency documentation for appropriate level of completion.

Personnel Management:

  • Attracts, retains, and develops quality team within areas of responsibility.
  • Ensures that orientation and training programs are established.
  • In conjunction with section supervisor(s) evaluates performance and implements recommendations for personnel actions.
  • Manages ongoing technical and professional development of staff and provide avenues for said growth through training, in-service, and other educational opportunities.
  • Consults with the Director and Division Chief about staffing issues and assist in developing additional resource requests or remediation plans in collaboration with Human Resources.
  • Ensures development of competency and training programs are available for laboratory staff.
  • Schedules staff meetings and ensures that staff on all shifts are informed and engaged

Quality:

  • Ensures compliance with regulatory and accreditation requirements of CAP, CLIA State of CA, and Joint Commission.
  • Reviews findings from complaints and occurrences through TIPS (QRRM) and takes appropriate follow-up actions where appropriate.
  • Ensures the implementation of the Department Quality Plan.
  • In partnership with Director and Division Chief oversees and reviews through active surveillance all quality control activities, including daily QC, proficiency testing, technical performance, and ensure documentation is maintained.

Clinical Research:

  • Participates in and supports research projects and protocols where appropriate.

Basic education, experience and skills required for consideration:

  • Minimum Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Science
  • Minimum Experiences:
    • Five to seven years of clinical laboratory technical experience
    • Three to five years of management experience

Required Certification/Licensure:

  • HT (ASCP) or HTL (ASCP) or CT (ASCP) or PA (ASCP)

Preferred education experience and skills:

  • Master’s degree
  • Experience in an academic medical center and/or NCI designated cancer center
  • Epic Beaker preferred

The estimated pay scale represents the typical [salary/hourly] range City of Hope reasonably expects to pay for this position, with offers determined based on several factors which may include, but not be limited to, the candidate’s experience, expertise, skills, education, job scope, training, internal equity, geography/market, etc. This pay scale is subject to change from time to time.
