Summary

A Research Associate position in neuroscience/metabolism is available at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. This position will focus on understanding the characterization and function different neuronal populations in the brain. The ideal candidate will hold a Master's degree or higher in the life sciences and have experience in animal handling and surgeries. Experience with molecular and cell biology techniques, including qPCR, western blots, immunohistochemistry, as well as animal surgery is expected. The Research Associate will oversee all mouse studies, including colony maintenance.

 

The Sisley lab is in the Children's Nutrition Research Center at Baylor College of Medicine. Our research focuses on the brain control of energy and glucose homeostasis. We are specifically interested in 1) the role of the vitamin D receptor in the brain on glucose control and 2) the effect of genetic variations on weight regulation. Our ultimate goals are to understand the biology of obesity and diabetes, and to use this knowledge to improve the diagnosis and treatment of patients with obesity and/or diabetes.

Job Duties

  • Collects, compiles and analyzes data using Microsoft Excel and GraphPad Prism
  • Selects, evaluates and applies techniques for routine molecular work (such as westerns and rtPCR)
  • Conducts animal surgeries
  • Conducts animal in vivo experiments, including glucose tolerance tests
  • Conducts immunohistochemistry experiments on brain tissue
  • Supervises undergraduate students
  • Helps train graduate students or postdoctoral fellows

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Basic Science or a related field.  Experience in lieu of degree will not be accepted.
  • Three years of relevant experience typically as a Research Assistant, Research Technician or Postdoctoral Fellow/Associate.

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least 3 years of experience post-degree in molecular techniques (qPCR, Western blots, immunohistochemistry)
  • Previous mouse surgical experience
  • Experience with neuroanatomy, glucose phenotyping, and basic animal handling
  • Over 5 years of laboratory experience
  • Desire to contribute to publications and present research at meetings
