Job Description

The College of Law at the University of Oklahoma seeks applicants for the Director of the Donald E. Pray Law Library. The Director of the Law Library is a 12-month, Tenure Track or Tenured faculty position and is appointed on a continuing appointment with rank (Associate Professor or full Professor) commensurate with experience and qualifications. Salary and conditions will also be commensurate with experience: $130,000-$185,000. The College of Law encourages applications from all interested and qualified parties.

The Director of the Law Library reports directly to the Dean of the College of Law and has overall responsibility for all aspects of library operations, including budgeting; hiring and supervision of library faculty and staff; strategic planning with respect to the future growth and development of the Law Library; and initiating and monitoring library programs and services. The Director ensures that the Law Library’s collection and resources are sufficient to meet the primary goal of supporting the teaching and research needs of the College of Law’s faculty, staff, and students, and ensures that the Law Library is in compliance with accreditation standards and membership requirements of the American Bar Association and the Association of American Law Schools. As Director and as a member of the faculty, the Director will actively participate in the intellectual life of the College, engaging in scholarly activities and teaching if so desired and as time permits.

The OU College of Law is a fully accredited public law school in Norman, Oklahoma. The College is home to more than 600 students annually in its J.D., LL.M., and M.L.S. degree programs as well as 32 full-time faculty members. The Law Library, which serves the faculty, students, and the public, is a center for innovation in legal research pedagogy, providing both technological and traditional methods of delivery of information. Since 2017, due to efforts led by the Law Library, the College of Law has been recognized as an Apple Distinguished School, recognizing its innovative uses of technology in learning. Moreover, the Library is home to one of the nation’s largest Native Peoples collections. The Library currently employs 7 librarians and 3 support staff and has a total annual budget of approximately 1.98 million dollars.

Required:

  • J.D. from an ABA accredited law school.
  • Degree in Library or Information Science.
  • Significant experience in law library administration.
  • Outstanding knowledge of the research, teaching, and educational needs of a highly productive faculty and diverse student body.
  • Strong supervisory, communication, and leadership skills.
  • Eligibility for a tenured position will be dependent on the nature, quality, and quantity of the candidate’s research, pursuant to review by the appropriate tenure committee.

Preferences (Not Required):

  • Experience with budget and financial management including vendor negotiations of complex contracts.
  • Demonstrated ability to cultivate and champion inclusive excellence.
  • A record of professional service and scholarly or creative work.
