ORGANIZATIONAL SUMMARY:

The Department of English is one of the largest academic departments in the University. We offer three undergraduate degree programs, two Master's programs, an MFA program, and two PhD programs. Our First Year Composition program serves over 5,500 students per year. We run over 400 sections of courses each semester, employing 166 teaching staff (regular faculty, visiting faculty, adjuncts, and TA's). We generate more SCH than almost any other academic unit in the university. Our faculty members are active scholars and researchers; hold editorships of journals; sit on numerous department, college, university, and professional association committees and councils; and are committed teachers. The department sponsors an annual award ceremonies and brings in speakers at least monthly. The department, as a whole, is striving to achieve excellence and assist the university in meeting its goals.

POSITION SUMMARY:

USF Writes is USF's web-based product that aims to improve students' writing, critical thinking, and collaborative competencies by helping instructors and students provide more useful, explicit feedback on student writing; facilitating self review, peer-reviews, team projects, and revision planning; enabling instructors and writing program administrators to make evidence-based curriculum changes; identifying and subsequently supporting students at risk, thereby advancing retention. We are currently serving by more than 12,000 users, including students and instructors in the First-Year Composition Program and Professional and Technical Communication Program. The Applications Developer III will serve as the staff specialist for the USF Writes database driven website application for the USF English Department and is responsible for the entire life cycle of the application to include analysis, coding, testing, and documentation. The Applications Developer III applies significant professional experience and training in information technology and computer programming to the analysis, design, modification, and maintenance of application programs, integrated systems, and/or software solutions. This position is auxiliary funded.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Develop programming code and software modifications using ASP.NET Web Form, Web API, VB.NET, C#.NET, HTML, Javascript, Visual Studio, and TFS, to provide responsive and innovative solutions, and new functionality in both the new and existing systems. Perform iterative user testing with key stakeholders at each phase of new development.

Design/ re-design and develop user interfaces for application by setting expectations and features priorities throughout development life cycle; determining design methodologies and tool sets; completing programming using languages and software products; designing and conducting usability tests.

Work closely with application manager and writing program administrators to develop new features and sustain functionality. Empower team to self-organize and grow cross-functionality. Manage the life cycle of code development. Coordinate and manage code releases and shared APIs with other IT groups, including with the college.

Performs other duties as assigned.

SCHEDULING INFORMATION:

Monday - Friday, 8:00AM - 5:00PM, with flexibility required for technical issues outside of scheduled hours. There is an option for a hybrid schedule upon the completion of the training/probation period.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

MINIMUM:

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, MIS or other field involving software and analytical training, and four years of IT related work experience, OR a Bachelor's degree with no specific required field and five years of IT related work experience, OR a Master's degree and three years of IT related work experience, OR a combination of eight years of IT related work experience and validated training. Preparation for a relevant IT certification is considered to be related training.

PREFERRED:

Prefer experience with data and analytical tools. Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Informatics, Statistics or a related discipline. Previous experience working in higher education.
