Job Description

Summary

The Accessioning Clerk, under the direction of the Laboratory Supervisor and Accessioning Coordinator, performs daily accessioning activities of receiving specimens, accessioning specimens, and scanning of requisitions into scan system.

 

The work schedule will generally be Monday - Friday, 18 hours per week in the evening after 4:00pm, but may require weekends as needed.

Job Duties

  • Receives and clocks in specimens from couriers; verifies that specimens recorded on courier logs are received.
  • Prioritizes and sorts specimens appropriately for accessioning and processing.
  • Performs data entry login of patient demographics, clinical information, specimen source, and test(s), orders from specimen requisitions into computer systems, and accessions specimen containers as needed or required.
  • Documents any orders which are lacking/mismatching appropriated documentation; documents all problem cases appropriately.
  • Places calls to clients to verify information.
  • Scans requisitions and all related paperwork into the scan system; shreds documents as needed.
  • Reviews specimen requisitions against data entry of requisition and demographics information for accuracy; documents errors noted and forwards documentation to supervisor and corrects errors found.
  • Answers departmental phone calls and assists clients as needed.
  • Prepares cassettes and slides; discards tissue per established policy.
  • Orders supplies as needed.
  • Assists with Frozen, FNA, Cytology preparation and Bone Marrow procedures.
  • Performs both daily and weekly maintenance in the accessioning area and grossing room.
  • Contributes to a positive work climate and to the team effort of the department and company.
  • Files slides and paperwork.
  • Maintains CAP, CLIA and OSHA in compliance.
  • Places slides in the specified holding areas for loading onto the scanner and/or pick up/delivery.
  • Assists with sample organization and tracking.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • No experience required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Comfortable working with/around bodily fluids/tissues.
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field.
  • Familiarity with histology or similar laboratory.
  • One to two years of prior job-related experience.
  • Knowledge or familiarity with medical terminology.
  • Must have the ability to establish work priorities and to handle several tasks for maximum efficiency.
  • High attention to detail, strong Excel, Work skills, is very organized, and drive to learn and grow with the department.
