Job Description

Position Highlights

The Medical/Science Writer is responsible for researching, writing, editing and refining original content supporting Moffitt's mission: to contribute to the prevention and cure of cancer. This experienced and enthusiastic Writer should have a strong background in communications, health care and/or science in order to distill and translate complex concepts for a consumer audience. This position will support internal communications including our strategic plan, CEO and executive leadership needs, as well as external communications including board member updates and awards. Content creation will also support various Moffitt communications vehicles such as publications, annual reports, brand journalism, newsletters, video production, events, media relations, editorial placements, and internal and external websites. This position will work closely with executive leadership, board members and founder H. Lee Moffitt. The writer will work with experts to identify and effectively tell the stories most meaningful to the cancer center.

 

Responsibilities:

 

  • Provide demonstrated research, reporting, interviewing, storytelling and writing skills.

 

  • Demonstrate ability to translate complex science and research into easily understandable concepts.

 

  • Build relationships with clients across the cancer center to support our mission and tell our story.

 

  • Copyedit for various projects.

 

  • Multitask and prioritize responsibilities to meet competing deadlines.

 

Credentials and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Public Relations, Communications, Journalism, Marketing, or related field required.

 

  • Minimum seven (7) years proven experience in public relations, communications, journalism or health care with a concentration in writing and editing for a scientific and/or medical audience.

 

  • Solid research, reporting, interviewing and storytelling skills.

 

  • Ability to translate complex science and research into easily understandable concepts.  Strong copyediting skills are essential to serve as backup to newsroom manager.

 

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

 

  • Time management skills including the ability to multitask under pressure.

 

  • Writing samples required

 

Preferred Experience:

 

  • Preferred ten (10) years proven experience in public relations, communications, journalism or health care with a concentration in writing and editing for a scientific and/or medical audience.

 

  • Experience in health care setting and understanding of HIPAA.

 

  • Journalism background to support brand journalism efforts.

 

  • Broadcast journalism background to assist with script writing and video projects.
