Cleveland Clinic’s Histology team prepares body tissue samples for microscopic examination by the pathologist, often while the patient is still in surgery, thus playinga major rolein the diagnosis of malignancy.The primary responsibility of this role is to accurately enter specimen information into the Laboratory Information System (LIS). The position requires comfort working with biological materials such as body parts and blood, as specimens are irretrievable and demand extreme attention to detail. Success in this role depends on strong problem-solving skills, the ability to work independently,a high levelof accuracy, initiative, and accountability in handling sensitive materials.

A caregiver in this positionworksdays, from11:00am—7:30pm.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:

  • Perform advanced manual processing and problem-solving techniques in laboratoryaccessioning/data entry, probleminvestigationsand resolution.

  • Be involved in creating slides and/or duties associated with thesubspecialtyclient liaison.

  • Be familiar with data analytics.

  • Receive andaccessionspecimens into the LIS.

  • Conduct higher levelaccessioningin the LIS including esoteric testing.

  • Conduct advanced tracking investigations.

  • Serve as a subspecialty client liaison.

  • Be responsible foradvanced problem solving/issue resolution (pendinglog/SERS/block QA).

  • The following duties are specific to Anatomic Pathology: perform tasks involved with creating slides and/or cell blocks, perform frozen section processing (frozen section slide creation), create cell block slides, clinical histology tissue embedding, andassistin cytology adequacy assessments.

  • Prepare specimens for analysis.

  • Perform manual processing (centrifuge,aliquotingand routine maintenance).

  • Run and resolve LIS logs.

  • Retrieve, sort,trackand deliver specimens.

  • Perform logistic activities within and outside oflab.

  • Use tracking software/devices.

  • Comply withsafety,SOP& regulations.

  • Maintainappropriate documentation.

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

  • AssociateDegree (preferably in science)

  • 2 years of lab processing experience

  • 4 years of lab technician or comparable processing experience may substitute the education requirement

  • Active enrollment in the Cleveland Clinic MLS program maysubstitutethe education and experience requirement

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Chemistry,Physicsor Medical Laboratory science (this may substitute the experiencerequirement)

  • Priorlaboratory experience(academic or professional)

  • Research experiencegained through coursework, independent projects, or internships


Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to perform specimen handling techniques and to take measurements.

  • Ability to perform work in a stationary position for extended periods.

  • Ability to move throughout the department and hospital system.

  • Handles and transports bio hazardous materials and potential carcinogens.

  • Ability to differentiate color, hue, saturation and tones.

  • Ability to live/move up to 50 lbs.

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as defined in the exposure control plan.

Pay Range

Minimum hourly: $25.00

Maximum hourly: $34.85

The pay range displayed on this job posting reflects the anticipated range for new hires. A successful candidate’s actual compensation will be determined after taking factors into consideration such as the candidate’s work history, experience, skill set and education.
