What Your Job Will Be Like:

Become an essential part of our team as a Motor Pool Mechanic Trades professional, where your skills in diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining a diverse fleet of diesel, gasoline, and electric vehicles will keep critical operations moving efficiently and reliably

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Repair, maintain, and modify a variety of diesel, gasoline, or electric powered vehicles, engines, and equipment.
  • Plan and perform repair, installation, or modification of vehicular bodies and body component.
  • Travel to pick up or deliver incapacitated vehicles.
  • Collaborate with platform engineering team to troubleshoot and repair various vehicle platforms.
  • As a condition of employment, this position is represented by the Metal Trades Council (MTC). Represented employees must pay the monthly membership dues or agency fees.

Qualifications We Require:

  • Modify, convert, assemble, overhaul, or perform general maintenance on a variety of diesel, gasoline, or electric powered vehicles, engines and equipment.
  • Perform planning and performing predictive, preventive and corrective maintenance on automotive and other vehicular equipment and body components.
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose problems including performing electrical/electronic system checkouts for engines, drivetrains, brakes and associated systems; selecting, setting up and operating various machines to fabricate, modify, or repair vehicles and equipment, including but not limited to welding and soldering; repairing and servicing vehicle heating and air conditioning systems; maintaining pneumatic and hydraulic pressurized systems; and troubleshooting and repairing electronic circuitry.
  • Consult with other Tradespersons and provide direction to other employees as required.
  • Utilize a computerized database to maintain required records.
  • Perform work using industry-standard safety practices.
  • Operate material handling equipment such as pallet jacks, forklifts and cranes.
  • Air brake service experience.
  • Obtain and maintain a Class A Commercial Driver¿s License (CDL), and hazmat endorsement for purpose of maintenance and repairs.
  • Fueling work is voluntary, lack of volunteers refer to seniority assignments in the CBA.
  • Typical experience includes minimum of 8 - 10 years as a fully qualified automotive mechanic or heavy truck mechanic; or any combination of experience and education or Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification(s).
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q Clearance

Qualifications We Desire:

¿ Degree or certificate from an Automotive or Diesel Vocational School.

¿ DOT certification as an air brake mechanic.

¿ Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Master Technician Certification.

¿ Obtain and maintain EPA certification for Mobile Air Conditioning repair, refrigerant

¿ recycling, and service procedures.

¿ Proficient in using electronic/computerized diagnostic and testing equipment.

¿ Skilled at diagnosing and servicing hydraulic systems.

¿ Hands-on familiarity with material handling equipment (i.e., forklifts/telehandlers) and aerial lifts (i.e., boom lifts/scissor lifts).

¿ Adept at working on mobile and stationary generators and associated subsystems.

Fleet Services Department manages the vehicle and equipment fleet and activities for Sandia National Laboratories (SNL). The fleet consists of GSA leased vehicles, DOE/NNSA owned vehicles and light and heavy duty equipment. Maintenance performed on DOE owned vehicles and equipment, Office of Secure Transportation (OST) fleet vehicles and administration of the GSA lease including promoting alternative fuel vehicles and infrastructure are integral activities within the department.

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications.
